SUN 'N FUN, FANTASY OF FLIGHT PARTNER ON FLY-IN'S 2008 SPLASH-IN

Sun ’n Fun is moving the popular “Splash-In” portion of its annual Fly-In from Lake Parker in Lakeland, Fla., to nearby Lake Agnes in Polk City – adjacent to the internationally known aviation attraction “Fantasy of Flight.”

“While the Sun ’n Fun Fly-In itself will proudly remain at Lakeland Linder Regional Airport, the ‘Splash-In’ portion will be held at Fantasy of Flight,” said Sun ’n Fun President and Fly-In Chairman John Burton. “Fly-In volunteers and members of the Sun ’n Fun staff have been working with Kermit Weeks and his team at Fantasy of Flight for the past several months to make this exciting possibility a reality. We think this will have a very positive impact on safety, logistics and participation at the Splash-In. At the same time, it will offer an opportunity for Splash-In participants and their guests to enjoy the short hop to Fantasy of Flight and to enjoy the attraction’s incredible facilities.”

The Sun ’n Fun Fly-In will be held April 8 – 13 at Lakeland Linder Regional Airport in Lakeland. The Splash-In portion of the Sun ’n Fun Fly-In is a two-day event and is designed especially for amphibians and seaplanes. It has become an increasingly popular and integral part of the Sun ’n Fun experience. The Splash-In portion of the Fly-In will take place this year on Thursday and Friday, April 10 and 11, at Fantasy of Flight.

“Last year, the event was moved from the northwest side of Lake Parker and relocated to the south end in order to accommodate a growing number of participants,” said Bill Gillespie, who along with his spouse, P.J., serve as Sun ’n Fun Fly-In Chairpersons for the Splash-In event. “The increased number of aircraft, pilots and enthusiastic spectators prompted us to look for a facility that could keep pace with the popularity of the Splash-In event. Fantasy of Flight is a wonderful solution.”

Gillespie said Fantasy of Flight provides a convenient location for both Splash-In and Fly-In participants and guests. It is located just off Interstate Highway 4 northeast of Sun ’n Fun, making it an easy drive or flight from Lakeland Linder Regional Airport and the Sun ’n Fun site. “Fantasy of Flight’s ability to accommodate both amphibians and float-only aircraft, along with their ability to offer camping facilities, will enable Sun ’n Fun to provide a premium experience for Splash-In guests and provide the opportunity for future expansion,” Gillespie added. “In the past, float-only flyers were unable to camp with their aircraft so, for the first time, they will be able to land at Fantasy of Flight and camp for the entire week if they wish. And, amphibians will be able to choose between Fantasy of Flight and on-site Sun ’n Fun camping options. All of these factors combine to make us very exited about this year’s Splash-In.”

“Fantasy of Flight is delighted to host this year’s Splash-In,” said Fantasy of Flight General Manager Kim Long. “Given the close proximity to Sun ’n Fun, our private airfield and great waterfront setting, Fantasy of Flight is the perfect location for this event”.

Housing the world’s largest private collection of vintage aircraft, Fantasy of Flight is home to such water-based aircraft as a Grumman Duck, a PBY Catalina and the only airworthy Short Sunderland MK5 in the world.
